Empire Building Challenge Funds 10 Multifamily Retrofit Projects

Through the Empire Building Challenge (EBC) program, NYSERDA has awarded nearly $28 million to support 10 retrofit projects that will bring energy efficiency and electrification upgrades to multifamily housing across New York State. Spanning more than 123 million square feet of real estate and 123,000 residential units, including 13,000 affordable housing units, these projects are poised to drive more than $150 million in private investment and attract cutting-edge solution providers to the region. Each project demonstrates practical strategies to sharply cut fossil fuel use, enhance resident comfort, and lower operating expenses for building owners. With 22 showcase buildings, 17 of which are located in disadvantaged communities, these projects further highlight how decarbonization can deliver healthier, more sustainable housing while providing a scalable roadmap for the broader market.
